The establishment of AIIMs aligns with the Union government’s goal to strengthen the healthcare system in both rural and urban areas. Moreover, it also aims to enhance Reproductive-Maternal-Neonatal-Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A).

To strengthen the country’s healthcare services across rural and urban areas, the central government is rolling out a plan to establish AIIMS in every state, as per Bharati Pravin Pawar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare. With this, the government aims to offer top-notch and cost-effective healthcare to the citizens.

Furthermore, the establishment of AIIMs also seeks to improve Reproductive-Maternal-Neonatal-Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A) and prevent communicable and non-communicable diseases.

Additionally, this move will contribute to the growth of medical tourism and the overall enhancement of the nation’s healthcare landscape.

Speaking at the event, the Minister said, "Since 2014, the government has been prioritising strengthening medical infrastructure," pointing out it is the Prime Minister's vision to establish AIIMS in every state.

“From 1 AIIMs in 2014 to 23 AIIMS and 10 being functional, over 1 lakh MBBS seats, over 70,000 PG seats, the aim is very clear that we provide quality education here in India so that people across other countries look towards India as the destination for their medical needs,” the Union State Minister added.

AIIMS is a group of autonomous government public medical universities established in 1956. AIIMS New Delhi, the forerunner institute, was established in 1956 under the administration of Jawaharlal Nehru. Over the years, AIIMS has played a crucial role in providing high-quality healthcare, conducting advanced research, and offering comprehensive teaching programs in various medical and related physical fields.

As of January 2023, there are 20 AIIMS, functioning in New Delhi, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur, Patna, Ranchi, Rishikesh, Raebareli, Mangalgiri, Nagpur, Gorakhpur, Kalyani, Bathinda, Deogarh, Guwahati, Vijayour, Bilaspur, Rajkot, Madurai. Further, Four more AIIMS are expected to become operational by 2025.

AIIMS has consistently been coming up with fresh initiatives to improve patient care. For instance, AIIMS New Delhi initiated measures to improve the efficiency of emergency medical and surgical services. The decision primarily tackles the challenges posed by many patients seeking emergency care. It sought to ensure timely and quality medical attention for those in need by expediting the admission or discharge of emergency patients based on their medical requirements.

Just days back, it introduced free rapid cardiac MRI service for Thalassemia patients. This service can be completed in just eight minutes, transforming how thalassemia patients are screened and monitored.
