Ayushman Bharat, India’s flagship healthcare initiative, has continually evolved to redefine public health. Since its launch in 2018, the program has aimed to achieve universal health coverage through its dual components: the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) and the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY). Together, these components have established a solid foundation for equitable healthcare delivery, leveraging cutting-edge technology and addressing diverse population needs.

The ABDM focuses on building a digital health ecosystem, empowering citizens to access and manage their medical records efficiently. By introducing tools such as the Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) ID, the mission streamlines patient data storage and sharing across healthcare providers, ensuring timely and effective care. Meanwhile, AB-PMJAY—the world’s largest government-funded health insurance program—offers financial protection of up to INR 5 lakh annually for vulnerable families.

Let's examine some of the major developments that occurred during this year.

A Bold Step Towards Inclusivity

In June, the Narendra Modi-led government unveiled an ambitious 100-day agenda for the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW), emphasizing digitization and expanding access to healthcare. A transformative policy decision extended AB-PMJAY’s health insurance coverage to all citizens aged 70 and above, irrespective of their economic status. This move significantly benefited India’s growing elderly population, offering financial security and addressing the rising cost of healthcare.

Another notable development was the inclusion of transgender individuals in the scheme. Historically marginalized, this community now has access to the same health benefits as others, reflecting the government’s commitment to equality and inclusivity.

In parallel, the government postponed the mandatory linkage of Central Government Health

Scheme (CGHS) beneficiary IDs with ABHA IDs. Initially set for April 2024, the deadline was deferred to accommodate diverse stakeholder perspectives. While this linkage is intended to streamline access to healthcare services, the delay allows beneficiaries to voluntarily integrate their health records, fostering trust and adoption among users.

Technology to Safeguard Pilgrims

July marked a significant milestone with the integration of Uttarakhand’s eSwasthya Dham portal into the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission. This initiative catered to pilgrims undertaking the arduous Char Dham Yatra, a spiritual journey often fraught with health risks due to challenging terrains and extreme weather conditions.

Through this integration, pilgrims could quickly generate ABHA IDs, ensuring their health records were accessible in emergencies. Real-time health monitoring facilities and instant access to digital records proved to be lifesaving for many participants, showcasing the practical benefits of ABDM in managing large-scale healthcare logistics.

Empowering Senior Citizens & Advancing AI

In September, the Union Cabinet approved a groundbreaking expansion of AB-PMJAY, extending comprehensive health coverage to all senior citizens aged 70 and above. This policy ensured financial protection against critical illnesses, a move especially significant in light of the demographic shift toward an aging population. With INR 5 lakh annual coverage per family, the scheme addressed the pressing need for affordable healthcare among India’s elderly.

The month also witnessed an exciting collaboration between the government and IIT Kanpur to develop an AI-driven federated learning platform. This initiative aims to benchmark clinical AI models, paving the way for accurate disease diagnosis and reliable data analytics. By leveraging AI, India is taking a leap toward personalized medicine and improved patient outcomes. This development highlights Ayushman Bharat's adaptability to emerging technologies, ensuring it stays relevant in a rapidly evolving global healthcare landscape.

Digital Accessibility & Senior Care

In October, the Ayushman Bharat Health ID announced the integration with Google Wallet, enhancing accessibility for over 600 million users by 2025. This partnership simplifies health record management, allowing citizens to store and access their medical data securely on their mobile devices. By aligning with popular digital platforms, Ayushman Bharat demonstrated its commitment to user-centric innovation.

Another notable initiative was Prime Minister Narendra Modi's launch of the Ayushman Vaya Vandana Card. This specialized card provides exclusive health benefits to senior citizens, ensuring they receive timely and quality care without financial stress. With INR 5 lakh annual coverage, the card symbolizes the government’s dedication to addressing the unique healthcare needs of the elderly.

Drones Transform Healthcare Logistics

November brought a technological breakthrough as drone logistics were introduced under AB-PMJAY. Skye Air, a leading provider of drone solutions, began operations in five AIIMS facilities, delivering critical medicines and medical supplies to remote areas. This innovation addresses the longstanding challenge of accessibility in underserved regions, particularly those with difficult terrain.

The deployment of temperature-controlled drones ensures the safe transport of sensitive medical items, including vaccines and life-saving drugs. By integrating drone technology into its operations, Ayushman Bharat reaffirms its focus on equitable healthcare delivery and technological advancements.

Transforming Healthcare in 2024

The milestones achieved under Ayushman Bharat in 2024 reflect its transformative impact on India’s healthcare landscape. Each development, from expanding insurance coverage for senior citizens to leveraging AI and drone technology, underscores the program’s adaptability and forward-thinking approach.

ABDM’s digital infrastructure has brought a paradigm shift, empowering citizens to take charge of their health through secure and accessible digital tools. Meanwhile, AB-PMJAY continues to protect the most vulnerable, reducing out-of-pocket expenses and ensuring that no one is left behind. The program’s focus on inclusivity, as seen in the inclusion of transgender individuals and elderly citizens, demonstrates its commitment to social equity.

As India progresses toward achieving universal health coverage, the program serves as a model of how technology, policy, and community engagement can work together to revolutionize public health. With its continued evolution, the scheme promises to lead India into a future of healthier, more empowered citizens.
