Each HEMS unit will consist of a specialized helicopter equipped with emergency life-support systems and a trained medical crew.
Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu proposed on Tuesday that more than 50 helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS) units be established along national highways and expressways.
The plan, presented during an industry event focused on helicopter operations, is intended to enhance rapid medical response, particularly in remote and inaccessible regions.
“This initiative will bring rapid medical assistance to areas that need it most,” Aviation Minister Naidu stated.
He emphasized that the HEMS network aligns with global healthcare standards and is expected to boost India’s use of helicopters in emergency medical services.
Each HEMS unit will consist of a specialized helicopter equipped with emergency life-support systems and a trained medical crew.
These units will be stationed near hospitals to facilitate the swift transport of critical patients.
Further, the center plans to introduce the first public HEMS unit at AIIMS Rishikesh under Project Sanjeevani, which aims to provide airlift services for patients from hilly regions in Uttarakhand.
In addition to the HEMS proposal, Naidu announced the revival of the 'Helicopter Accelerator Cell' within the Ministry of Civil Aviation.
“This cell will be a dedicated platform for addressing the regulatory and operational needs of the helicopter industry. It’s time for tailored support and faster responses to sector-specific challenges,” Naidu noted.
By involving industry experts and streamlining decision-making processes, the Accelerator Cell aims to improve the efficiency of helicopter operations and support the industry's growth trajectory.
