Apple states that every 30 days, the Series 10 watch will analyze breathing disturbance data and notify users if it detects consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea.
Recognizing the growing need for sleep disorder monitoring, Apple has introduced a new metric, "Breathing Disturbances," in its Apple Watch Series 10.
This tool uses the watch's accelerometer to detect subtle movements associated with interruptions in normal breathing patterns during sleep.
By analyzing these movements, the Apple Watch can identify potential sleep apnea cases.
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is becoming a significant public health issue globally, with India seeing a sharp rise in sleep disorders. Over 104 million working-age Indians are estimated to suffer from OSA, with 47 million cases being moderate to severe.
This condition is a growing concern as it often goes undiagnosed and untreated despite its serious health implications.
OSA causes breathing to momentarily stop during sleep, reducing oxygen intake. This disruption can lead to long-term health problems, including high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, and an increased risk of cardiac issues.
Globally, over 1 billion people are estimated to suffer from sleep apnea, highlighting the need for more effective detection and treatment strategies.
Apple states that every 30 days, the Series 10 watch will analyze breathing disturbance data and notify users if it detects consistent signs of moderate to severe sleep apnea.
This notification prompts users to consult their doctor for further diagnosis and treatment. Users can access their nightly breathing disturbance data through the Health app on their iPhones, where it is classified as either elevated or not elevated.
The ‘Breathing Disturbances’ feature not only assists in identifying sleep apnea but can also be used to assess the overall restfulness of sleep. Factors such as alcohol consumption, medications, and sleep positions can influence this metric.
Over time, users can view their breathing disturbances across one-month, six-month, or one-year periods in the Health app.
Apple Watch users can also send a detailed PDF report to their healthcare providers. This report includes up to three months of breathing disturbance data, showing potential periods when sleep apnea may have occurred.
This feature enhances communication between users and their doctors, potentially leading to earlier diagnosis and treatment.
In addition to health tracking, the Series 10 watch brings tools for everyday convenience, including the Translate app and Check-In capabilities. These new functions, combined with its health innovations, position the Apple Watch Series 10 as a versatile tool for both wellness and productivity.
