With the FDA's approval, Apple will introduce this feature via a software update later this year in over 100 countries.

Global tech giant Apple has secured approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the hearing aid functionality of its AirPods Pro 2.

This update, announced at Apple's recent 'It’s Glowtime' event, transforms the AirPods Pro 2 into hearing aids for individuals with mild-to-moderate hearing loss, aligning with the FDA’s 2022 decision to allow over-the-counter hearing aids.

With the FDA's approval, Apple will introduce this feature via a software update later this year in over 100 countries.

The AirPods Pro 2 will offer real-time sound enhancement, improving speech clarity and environmental awareness without requiring medical exams or audiologist visits.

In addition to hearing aid functionality, the AirPods Pro 2 will include an Active Hearing Protection feature to help users reduce exposure to loud noises.

A self-administered Hearing Test is also available, allowing users to assess their hearing health at home and share results with healthcare providers.

This move further integrates Apple's health monitoring capabilities, making hearing care more accessible worldwide.

Highlights of AirPods Pro 2

With the newly approved feature, AirPods Pro 2 users can enhance real-time sound, improving clarity in conversations and increasing environmental awareness.

This advancement aims to assist millions globally who experience hearing loss, offering an alternative to traditional hearing aids.

Apple has also introduced a self-administered Hearing Test feature, compatible with iPhones and iPads. The test, which is clinically validated, mimics standard pure-tone audiometry used in medical settings.

Users can complete the test in about five minutes from home, receiving a detailed summary of their results. The audiogram is stored in the Health app, allowing for easy sharing with healthcare providers for further consultation.
