Ghaziabad is set to get a significant boost in healthcare with the proposed establishment of an AIIMS satellite center in the trans-Hindon region.
District Magistrate Indra Vikram Singh confirmed that a 12-acre land parcel for the facility has been identified in Vasundhara. The facility is expected to address the medical needs of over 20 lakh residents.
The trans-Hindon region, which includes townships such as Indirapuram, Vasundhara, Vaishali, Kaushambi, and Delta Colony of Surya Nagar, currently does not have a government hospital.
Residents have been vocal about the challenges of accessing quality healthcare without a government hospital nearby, forcing many to travel long distances for treatment. This move aims to address this issue.
A district administration official stated that the idea of an AIIMS satellite center in Ghaziabad had been under consideration for some time, especially to alleviate the overwhelming patient load at the main AIIMS facility in Delhi.
“It is proposed that the medical institute offer an out-patient department (OPD) and accommodation for attendants of patients. However, patients requiring admission will be referred to AIIMS Delhi. A proposal has been submitted to the state government for approval. Once the green light is given, a draft plan will be forwarded to the central government for final clearance,” said the official.
The facility is expected to significantly reduce the burden on AIIMS Delhi, which often struggles with patient overcrowding.
Once approval is granted, the Uttar Pradesh government will construct the AIIMS satellite center. This will be the second such facility in the state after the Raebareli AIIMS, which was sanctioned in 2009.
Furthermore, the new center is expected to meet the growing medical demands in the Ghaziabad region while complementing existing healthcare infrastructure in nearby districts.
The establishment of this center is part of the larger healthcare plan of the Uttar Pradesh government, which aims to bolster medical services in underserved areas.
Ghaziabad currently has four government hospitals, including MMG Hospital (128 beds), New District Women Hospital (100 beds), District Combined Hospital (100 beds), and a smaller facility in Loni (50 beds).
The CM, Yogi Adityanath, recently inaugurated another 50-bed hospital, though it has yet to become operational.
Despite the presence of these government hospitals, the district continues to face a severe shortage of doctors.
According to available data, out of 364 sanctioned doctor posts, 90 remain vacant across these hospitals, leading to overburdened staff and long patient wait times.
The absence of adequate medical personnel has made it difficult for these facilities to cater to the needs of the local population, many of whom also come from neighboring districts such as Meerut, Hapur, and Bulandshahr for advanced surgeries and specialized care.
"Once the approvals are in place, this facility will transform healthcare accessibility in the region,” said a local official involved in the planning process.
