AIIMS Driving AI, Digital Healthcare, & Research: MoS Jadhav

AIIMS has introduced a Centre of Excellence for AI in healthcare, developing AI-based solutions for diagnosing chest X-rays, detecting diabetic retinopathy, and identifying skin lesions. The institute is also expanding robotic surgery training, equipped with two advanced robotic surgery systems.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi is advancing medical research, AI-driven healthcare, and digital health integration, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, said.

He highlighted AIIMS’ leadership in medical education and its role as the National Resource Centre under the National Medical College Network (NMCN).

AIIMS has introduced a Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare, developing AI-based solutions for diagnosing chest X-rays, detecting diabetic retinopathy, and identifying skin lesions. The institute is also expanding robotic surgery training, equipped with two advanced robotic surgery systems.

Jadhav noted AIIMS' significant research contributions, with over 900 extramural projects funded by national and international agencies, receiving grants of nearly INR 200 Cr. The institution has also invested in more than 240 intramural research projects and launched a Centre for Medical Innovation & Entrepreneurship under the BIRAC – BioNEST Scheme.

On the infrastructure front, AIIMS has expanded hospital capacity, increasing inpatient beds by 30% and ICU and operation theatre services by nearly 40% in the last two years. A new hostel complex with 2,200 rooms is under construction at an estimated cost of INR 900 Cr. New academic facilities, including the Mother and Child Block, Surgery Block, and the National Centre of Ageing, are operational.

AIIMS is leading India's digital health transformation under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM). It has integrated electronic health records through Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA) IDs and introduced e-prescriptions, starting with the Endocrinology and Mother & Child Health Block. The institute is also implementing QR code-based queue systems, real-time dashboards for patient management, and digital integration of laboratory services.

Jadhav emphasized AIIMS’ role in training other hospitals in digital health adoption, aligning with the government’s efforts to standardize healthcare data and improve patient safety. The institute’s advancements in AI, robotics, and digital health are expected to strengthen India’s healthcare system and enhance accessibility nationwide.
