The buses will be monitored with CCTV cameras and GPS tracking for safety, and a mobile application will be available for real-time tracking and service feedback.

The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi has unveiled a new electric bus (eBus) service designed to improve patient transport within its campus.

This initiative aims to address issues such as long walking distances, costly auto rickshaws, and limited commuting options for patients and their carers.

Commenting on the initiative, Dr M Srinivas, director, AIIMS Delhi, said, “As part of such initiatives to provide the best patient care services to our patients, we are committed to making the patient experience at AIIMS New Delhi better every day. This initiative will not only solve the transport woes of our patients but also provide a reliable and convenient ride within the campus.”

Enhanced Patient Mobility

The eBus service will feature 14-seater electric buses equipped with modern amenities, including air conditioning, a low-floor design for easy entry, and wheelchair access.

These buses will operate at 10-minute intervals during peak hours from 7 am to 7 pm on regular days and every 15 minutes on Mondays, except holidays.

Additionally, they will have designated stops with shelters and call buttons for added convenience. The buses will be monitored with CCTV cameras and GPS tracking for safety, and a mobile application will be available for real-time tracking and service feedback.

Moreover, payments will be processed through UPI or an AIIMS Smart Card.

Addressing Transport Challenges

The new service is intended to alleviate traffic congestion and environmental pollution, providing a more sustainable and efficient transport solution within the campus.

By reducing reliance on traditional transport methods, the eBus initiative is expected to lower carbon footprints and decrease noise pollution.

Sharing thoughts, Dr Rima Dada, in charge of the Media Cell, said, “We would like the journey for patients who are coming to our campus to be absolutely smooth and hassle-free, along with their attendants. The introduction of travel packages extends a model shaped around moving passengers, something that for long has been an ambition for businesses in The Boring Company network.”

Previous Developments

In recent developments, AIIMS Delhi collaborated with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop a specialized exoskeleton. This exoskeleton aims to assist injured soldiers who have lost their ability to walk or have become paralyzed, helping them regain mobility.

Additionally, to address the rising incidence of cancer in India, AIIMS Delhi has partnered with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (CDAC) Pune to introduce iOncology.ai.

This AI-based platform focuses on enhancing cancer diagnosis through early detection and analyzing complex medical data with high accuracy and efficiency.
