This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of “Make AI in India and Make AI Work for India,” and has been allocated a total financial outlay of INR 990 crore for the period from 2023-24 to 2027-28.
AIIMS Delhi, IIT Delhi, IIT Kanpur, and IIT Ropar have been selected to spearhead India’s Centres of Excellence (CoE) in Artificial Intelligence (AI), with a focus on healthcare, sustainable cities, and agriculture, respectively.
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan informed Parliament recently that these centres will function as consortiums, uniting top academic and research institutions with industry partners and startups to drive innovation.
The initiative brings together a prestigious network of institutions, including IIT Madras, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, IIT Tirupati, IIT Guwahati, IIT Gandhinagar, IISc Bangalore, IIIT Hyderabad, AIIMS Patna, NIT Meghalaya, NIT Hamirpur, and NIT Calicut.
An Apex Committee comprising industry experts, AI specialists, academicians, and ministry representatives overseen the selection process, ensuring rigorous evaluation standards.

In a related development, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted AIIMS Delhi’s leadership in advancing AI-driven healthcare and digital health integration.
As the National Resource Centre under the National Medical College Network (NMCN), AIIMS has introduced a Centre of Excellence for AI in healthcare.
This centre focuses on developing AI-based solutions for diagnosing chest X-rays, detecting diabetic retinopathy, and identifying skin lesions.
AIIMS is also expanding its robotic surgery training, with two advanced robotic surgery systems in place.
The institution has made significant research contributions, managing over 900 extramural projects funded by national and international agencies with grants nearing INR 200 Cr.
Additionally, AIIMS has invested in over 240 intramural research projects and launched a Centre for Medical Innovation & Entrepreneurship under the BIRAC–BioNEST Scheme, reinforcing its commitment to cutting-edge medical research and innovation.
