Most recently, he served as group CEO for the Primary Health Division and Multi-State Division, managing 22 campuses across eight states and three regional partnerships.
David Banks has been formally appointed by AdventHealth's board of directors as new President/CEO. The transition will take effect immediately.
His appointment follows former CEO Terry Shaw's retirement announcement in December.
Banks is stepping into the leadership role ahead of schedule. While Shaw had planned to vacate the position in July, the transition has been accelerated. However, an AdventHealth spokesperson confirmed Shaw will remain on the board of directors.
"It is an incredible honor to be asked to lead AdventHealth. Our culture supports and develops one another, and I wouldn’t be here without the support of many along the way, including the visionary leadership of Terry Shaw," Banks said.
Banks has been a longtime executive at AdventHealth for more than 30 years. Most recently, he served as group CEO for the Primary Health Division and Multi-State Division, managing 22 campuses across eight states and three regional partnerships.
In addition, Banks previously worked as the Florida-based organization’s chief strategy officer, playing a key role in shaping Vision 2030, AdventHealth’s 10-year strategic business plan.
AdventHealth Board Chairman Gary Thurber said, "David's unwavering dedication to and passion for AdventHealth's mission will provide strength and stability for the continued growth and prosperity of AdventHealth."
His appointment comes at a time of significant growth for the health system.
Currently, AdventHealth manages over 2,000 care sites, including 55 hospitals, and has a workforce of roughly 100,000 employees. The system reported an operating income of $2.3 billion last year, a substantial increase compared to $1 billion in 2023.
Further expanding its presence in Florida, AdventHealth recently completed a $260 million acquisition of ShorePoint Health from Community Health Systems. This move strengthens its foothold in the Florida market, where it already holds a dominant position.
Banks holds a master's degree in nonprofit administration from the University of Maryland's School of Social Work and a bachelor's degree from Pacific Union College. He has previously served in leadership roles with the American Heart Association of Central Florida, Community Vision, and the YMCA of Central Florida.
